Free fitness classes offered for seniors

| April 17, 2010 9:00 PM

Fit and Fall Proof free fitness classes for seniors, sponsored by the Panhandle Health District, will start May 11 at Kootenai Medical Center.

Fit and Fall Proof was designed to strengthen hearts and improve balance to reduce the number of crippling falls among Idaho's oldest residents.

The hourlong classes will run twice a week and are appropriate for all fitness levels. Participants gently stretch calves and reach their arms to the sky. They strengthen their feet by pushing against elastic bands and balancing on one foot.

Class leaders are seniors in the community who undergo special training arranged by PHD.

The eight-week class has helped participants lose weight, lower their blood pressure, improve bone density and more. It also provides a social opportunity twice weekly.

The popular PHD-managed program is offered throughout the five northern counties. The class will run in KMC's classrooms Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. for eight weeks.
