Stephen J. Hancock, 91

Stephen J. Hancock, 91, of Post Falls, passed away April 4, 2010, at home. He was born April 7, 1918, in Lusk, Wyo., to Berthram A. and Mildred H. (Hunt) Hancock.

He grew up in San Diego, Calif., where he met and married Bernice Smith in 1971. They moved to Post Falls in 1978 from San Diego following his retirement from the Department of Defense at Calibration Lab in North Island Naval Station. He served in the Navy during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Stephen was an avid fisherman and bicyclist. He rode his bike from Post Falls to San Diego when he was in his 70s. He was a runner and did Bloomsday several times while in his 80s. He enjoyed walking his dog on the centennial trail and cooking.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Bernice at home; son John (Debbie) Hancock of Roseburg, Ore.; daughters Helen Waid of Pensacola, Fla., Joan (Bob) Applegate of Green Valley, Ariz., Susan (Fred) Pfursich of Spokane, Wash., and Leesa Culver of Orange Park, Fla.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Stephen; daughter Jackie; three brothers and four sisters.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835. At his request, no services will be held. English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls, is in care of the arrangements.
