PREP VOLLEYBALL: Post Falls wins at Volleyball 4 the Cure

POST FALLS — The Post Falls Trojans moved one step closer to clinching the 6A Inland Empire League volleyball title, but that wasn't the most important thing that happened Tuesday night at The Arena.  

Freshman Peyton Barclift had 16 kills, senior Teresa Smith 14 as Post Falls beat the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-12 in the annual Volleyball 4 the Cure match for breast cancer awareness. 

"Nights like tonight put everything into perspective," Post Falls coach Casey Cornett said. "Before the match, we had the honor of welcoming Amy and her father, Fred, to center court to honor the memory of Amy’s mother, JoAnn Scott, who passed away from breast cancer this past summer. Amy has given so much to our community and our volleyball program, so being able to surround her family with love was truly the most meaningful part of the evening. Our community showed up in such a generous way through our basket raffles and honor wall to support local patients fighting this disease. To see our girls carry that energy onto the floor and battle through four tough sets against a great Coeur d’Alene team made it a complete night." 

Lucy Carr had 24 assists, Lucy Smith 20 for Post Falls (19-3, 3-0), which clinched a tie for the league title. Teresa Smith also had 12 digs, two aces and a block, Jade Laos 12 digs, Barclift and Annabelle Tucker four aces each, Carr two aces, Rylie Gump two blocks, Reese DeGraw one for the Trojans, ranked fourth in 6A by MaxPreps. 

"Peyton and Teresa really paced our offense, our setters ran a balanced game, and the girls showed great poise closing out that fourth set," Cornett said. "Winning is great, but playing for something bigger than ourselves made tonight unforgettable." 

For Coeur d'Alene (20-6), ranked eighth in 6A, Hannah Shafer had 21 assists, 11 digs, five kills and two aces, Jovie Le nine kills and three blocks, Emily Hackett 11 digs and seven assists, Embree McKeown 25 digs, Avery Wilson five kills, Lola Ruggiero three blocks, Maren Larson five kills, Julianna Hasso three aces. 

"Our team blocked well tonight and had some good moments of energy and scrappy defense, but we couldn't sustain that throughout the match," Coeur d'Alene coach Carly Curtis said. "We struggled with serve-receive and consistency at the net. The challenge now is to put those good moments together and carry that energy from point to point." 

Coeur d'Alene plays host to Lake City on Thursday at 5 p.m. 

Post Falls returns to action Oct. 8 at Lake City in the 6A IEL and regular-season finale.

Lewiston 

LEWISTON — Junior Ella Jeanselme totaled 14 kills, 13 digs, two aces and a block as the visiting Timberwolves beat the Bengals 29-27, 25-12, 25-19. 

Camryn Woodman added 10 kills, 10 digs, an ace and a block for Lake City (16-8). Kate Moglia had 30 assists, nine digs, two kills and two aces, Sonia Rei-Fong 25 digs. 

"Playing at Lewiston is always a tough environment; they exposed us when we weren’t disciplined and made us get crafty to score," Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. "Pleased with our fight to claw back into the first set and take it. We have good momentum heading into another big match on Thursday." 

Lake City plays at Coeur d'Alene on Thursday at 5 p.m. 

Lewiston is 9-6.

SPIRIT LAKE — The visiting Badgers beat the Tigers in five sets for a second straight matchup to win the Intermountain League title, and the right to host the best-of-3 series for the 4A District 1-2 title. 

Bonners (6-9, 2-0 IML) won 25-13, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9. 

For Timberlake (5-9, 0-2), Willow Mattson had six aces, 10 assists and 10 digs, Addie Archer six kills and 15 digs, Shae Jones 10 blocks, three aces and three kills, Layla Webb six kills, three blocks and three aces, Jordyn Parke 13 assists and seven digs, Abby Harden 17 digs. 

"We had opportunities to put the game away in the fourth set but just couldn’t get it done," Timberlake coach Lisa Gardom said. "Both teams played scrappy and we had some good rallies. Shae Jones was patient with the Bonners Ferry hitters and protected the net well tonight with 10 blocks, nine individual, a career high. We knew Bonners would play hard and they did. I think they showed they wanted it a little more than we did tonight." 

Bonners can win the district title with a victory in the first match on Oct. 12. Timberlake must win the first match for the series to continue. 

Timberlake travels to Priest River on Thursday.

COEUR d'ALENE — The Saints swept a North Idaho League match against the Warriors 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 at Holy Family Catholic School.
