PREP ROUNDUP: Viking girls win own tourney by one shot over five-time champion Rocky Mountain

"Every shot matters." 

Led by junior Ella Wilson, Coeur d'Alene's girls golf team won the Susan Mitchell Invitational on Monday at Hayden Lake Country Club by one stroke. 

Wilson shot a 3-over-par 75 for Coeur d'Alene, which totaled a 316 — one shot better than Rocky Mountain of Meridian, which has won the last five state girls titles in Idaho's largest classification. 

Emily Stillert shot 78, Leah Heavener 79 for Coeur d'Alene, runners-up to Rocky at state each of the past two years.

At the Jim Kraus Invitational across the street at Avondale Golf Club, Mountain View of Meridian shot a 292 and won by 17 strokes over Rocky Mountain of Meridian. 

Both tourneys were hosted by Coeur d'Alene High.

"It is awesome to have some of the Boise schools up for our home tournaments," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. "Our major takeaway from today is that every shot matters, everything matters and we need to always see it through and stay composed to the end."

Post Falls' boys, led by Hunter Topie's 72, were third at 316. 

Jackson Satterlee of Mountain View was medalist with a 3-under 69. Trey Lambert of Lake City tied for second with a 71.  

Coeur d'Alene hosts the Circling Raven Invitational today at Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley, with a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.

POST FALLS — Freshman Brennen Suchoski scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute, and the visiting Lumberjacks won their first game since the 2022 season, defeating the Trojan junior varsity. 

Seniors Trace Chatigny and Titus Sullivan also scored for St. Maries (1-10-1), which last won on Sept. 24, 2022, 3-2 over Grangeville in an Intermountain League game. 

"The boys are thrilled," said St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo, who started the program in 2001. "The goal was to try to get better as the season goes on, and they have been." 

Post Falls JV won 3-1 at St. Maries last Thursday. 

St. Maries returns to action Thursday at Moscow.

COEUR d'ALENE — Ingeborg Pedersen scored for the visiting 4A Panthers in the 55th minute, and Marlys Smith scored the equalizer for the host 6A Viking junior varsity in the 72nd minute. 

"We knew it would be a tough game physically and technically," Charter coach Stacy Smith said. "They have a roster full of club players and we have girls with significantly limited experience that we've asked to step into big roles for us. I'm so proud of how the girls handled themselves and dug in. It wasn't always pretty and I was pleased that we finished one of our great opportunities on goal with Ingeborg's header. We're moving in the right direction on tough matchups for us." 

Coeur d'Alene Charter (8-4-1) plays host to Priest River on Wednesday at The Fields in Post Falls.
