COEUR d’ALENE — It’s been a good week for the Vikings this week. 

An early loss, removed. 

A rivalry win, accomplished 

From that, a league championship. 

Junior Blake Baune scored in the first minute on an assist from junior Blake Wise for Coeur d’Alene in a 3-0 win over Lake City in a 6A Inland Empire League match, clinching the top seed to districts next month. 

“Our players came out with really good energy to start off,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “We were really motivated to play this game today. We established control early, and never gave it up.” 

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene’s appeal of a ruling by the Idaho High School Activities Association was overturned, removing a forfeit for the Vikings' and Sandpoint's boys and girls programs from a previously determined unauthorized scrimmage. While the teams are unable to reschedule the match that was canceled, none of the teams have to count the game as a loss. 

“It’s great to see them recognize that it was an honest error,” Harmelink said. “I’m glad it was successful and the record can show how accurately we’ve played throughout the season.” 

Coeur d’Alene (8-0, 3-0 6A IEL), ranked second by MaxPreps in 6A behind Mountain View of Meridian, travels to Lewiston on Tuesday. 

Lake City (5-5, 1-2) hosts Lewiston on Thursday.

POST FALLS — Junior Cruz Andrich scored a pair of second half goals for the Trojans in a nonleague win over the Bengals at The Fields. 

“Tonight was really the culmination of what we’ve been working on since Day 1,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “Just how fast we want to play, and with accuracy, those things started to come together a little bit. We played them tight (Lewiston won 2-1 on Aug. 25 in the season opener) the first time, and we’re starting to do the things we want to do. The kids are starting to gel, and you can see that with how we’re moving the ball.” 

Post Falls (2-5) faces Sandpoint on Tuesday at War Memorial Field. 

Lewiston (3-6) hosts Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

MOSCOW — Senior Luke Fritts scored two goals and had another waved off due to an offside call for the Hawks, who fell to the Bears in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

“It was a good, physical game,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “We were playing a little better than them, but it matters who scores. Our kid was trying to clear the ball in the box and tripped one of their players.” 

That call, with the score tied at 4, led to Moscow’s Beckett Sett converting a penalty kick in the 75th minute for Moscow (4-7, 1-3 5A IEL). 

“We’ve got to be a little smarter and not give them those opportunities,” Haynes said. “We’re learning, and sometimes you’ve got to learn the hard way. But we’re getting more kids involved in the offense, which is good to see.” 

Lakeland (5-4, 2-2) hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — Junior Brooks Judd had a hat trick by the 23rd minute for the visiting Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Lumberjacks at PotlatchDeltic Field. 

“Glad to see Gavin Deegan get his first high school goal, and Jacob Poncato and Patrick Leahy get their first assists,” Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “Brooks Judd did a great job today getting us going and Creighton Lehosit controlled our defense like an on-the-field coach. The St. Maries keeper was a phenomenal athlete. Gabe Halloran made some fantastic saves for them.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (7-2-1, 6-0-0 IML) travels to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday. 

St. Maries (0-9, 0-8) is scheduled to play host to Timberlake at City Park on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — It’s been a while in the regular season since the Vikings have knocked off their crosstown rivals. 

That changed on Saturday night. 

Coeur d’Alene took advantage of an own goal in the 54th minute to beat Lake City in a 6A Inland Empire League match at Viking Field. 

“This season has been a process,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg, whose team fell 2-0 to Lake City on Sept. 8 in the other league match between the schools. “Every week, we’re taking steps forward. The girls really stepped it up and were able to move the ball around and create more chances. And we defended a lot better than the last game. It was a big step forward this time around.” 

Lake City (7-2, 1-1 6A IEL) hosts Mead on Monday. 

Coeur d’Alene (5-3, 1-1) travels to Moscow on Thursday.

RATHDRUM — The host Hawks (2-4-3, 1-2-3 5A Inland Empire League) fell to the Bears (5-3-1, 3-1-1) at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“I’m so impressed at how hard my girls played the entire game,” Lakeland coach Allison Guy said. “Jailyn Scott (a freshman defender) had an incredible game, saving us from some possible shots on goal and carrying the ball up the field. I continue to be proud of this team’s work ethic and perseverance, and we’re looking forward to the week ahead.”

ST. MARIES — Sophomore Riley Greene scored a hat trick and also had three assists as the Panthers beat the Lumberjacks in Intermountain League play at PotlatchDeltic Field. 

Senior Sierra Sheppard also had a hat trick and two assists for Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (7-2-1, 7-1-1 IML). Karis Vatterrodt added two goals for the Panthers. 

“We were a little tired, sore and banged up after Friday night's game against Sugar-Salem (at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane Valley), Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “However, we showed up on a beautiful day in St. Maries with a 'let's have fun’ attitude and the girls did just that. They played loose and supportive of each other. We got some excellent minutes from our younger, less experienced players. I was extremely proud of both of our freshmen, Karis and Reagan (Fish), who put away their goal-scoring opportunities.” 

St. Maries dipped to 2-9, 2-8. 

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Bonners Ferry, and St. Maries plays host to Timberlake.

SPIRIT LAKE — The visiting Diggers finished off a sweep of the top two teams in the Intermountain League with the win over the Tigers. 

Sugar-Salem (10-0-1), ranked No. 1 in 4A by MaxPreps, beat Coeur d’Alene Charter 8-0 on Friday night at the HUB Sports Center in Liberty Lake. 

Andee Petterson scored a hat trick for Sugar-Salem. 

“We started out really strong in the first half, playing great team defense, but unfortunately had two goals go in,” Timberlake coach Logan Georgeadis said. “Sugar came out aggressive in the second half and put two more quick ones in the back of our net. They have talented players in each section of the field and it was a challenge for my girls today. I think we held our own for a good chunk of the game, but their play style just wore us down. The overall on- and off-ball movement from Sugar was a lot to handle and I give praise to (coach) Scott Terry and his staff for the job with those girls. I am hopeful that our paths might cross again in state because we would like another shot at the standard of 4A soccer.” 

Timberlake (8-2-1), which leads the IML, travels to St. Maries on Tuesday. 

Timberlake is ranked sixth, Coeur d’Alene Charter ninth in 4A by MaxPreps.
