NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinals take challenge, shut out Colorado Northwestern
• MEN'S SOCCER
COEUR d’ALENE — The challenging part of the North Idaho College men’s soccer schedule will come next week.
As for the one on Saturday, it took a few minutes.
Aidan McGuire, a sophomore from Bellingham, Wash., scored in the 33rd minute, his first of three goals on the day for the 13th ranked Cardinals in a 6-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference win over Colorado Northwestern at Eisenwinter Field.
“Aidan is always looking like he’s going to score, whether in practice or games as well,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “He scored against Laramie County, but has been out with a concussion, but came back hungry, and it showed today.”
NIC (8-0-1, 5-0 SWAC) leads the conference, with nationally ranked Utah State-Eastern (14th in latest NJCAA poll) and Salt Lake (fourth) visiting next week. NIC faces Utah State-Eastern Thursday at the Marimn Health Coeur Center in Worley, then hosts the Bruins in Worley on Saturday.
Lennox Kern, a sophomore from Frankfurt, Germany, had a goal and assist for the Cardinals, opening th scoring in the 28th minute on a penalty kick.
“Part of it was feeling out the field and trying to figure out how they were playing,” said Williams of NIC’s slow start. “They were loading the back half of their defense, and it makes it hard when you’ve got to go through 11 guys. But we were able to adapt and adapt well.”
