65 Years of Love, Faith and Family: Duane and Enid Heintz Celebrate Their Anniversary
Sixty-five years ago, on Sep. 28, 1961, Duane Heintz and Enid Williams began their life together as husband and wife at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clarkston, Wash. Six and a half decades later, their marriage has grown into a remarkable legacy of faith, family, friendship and service.
Their story began with two young people who enjoyed dancing the jitterbug and, apparently, a little adventure. On their honeymoon trip to Reno, the newlyweds decided to stop along the way for some fishing. There was just one problem: they didn't have fishing licenses. Their honeymoon included an unexpected stay in jail and a fine — an amusing story that has become part of family lore. Those who know Duane well probably aren't surprised. He has loved fishing his entire life.
Together, Duane and Enid raised four children: Lesa, Gerry, Rick and Kristy. Their family has continued to grow and now includes six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Their son Rick passed away on Jan. 16, 2008, and is deeply missed by the family. Their faith gives them the hope that one day they will see him again in his forever home with the Lord.
The family made their home in Lewiston while raising their children. After many years, Duane retired from the Camas Prairie Railroad. Enid devoted herself to raising their children and became known as the neighborhood mom — the person who was always ready to help. She also worked in a business office before spending many years as a florist at Fairley's Flowers in Lewiston.
After retirement, the couple continued to build a life full of activity and adventure. They built a log home on the south end of Coeur d'Alene Lake, later moved to Rathdrum, and eventually built their retirement home in Leisure Park in Hayden, Idaho.
Their lives have always been about relationships. They have traveled and continue to make trips throughout the Pacific Northwest to visit family and friends. They have also developed an extraordinary circle of friendships. In Leisure Park, both Duane and Enid are actively involved in organizing social events and gatherings for their fellow residents.
Their willingness to help others is simply part of who they are. Enid is the person who will show up with a pot of chicken noodle soup when someone is sick or offer a neighbor a ride to the doctor. Duane is the person who will help a grandchild remodel kitchen counter tops or lend his skills to repair a neighbor's vacuum cleaner or garage door. They don't just talk about caring for people — they show it in the practical, everyday ways that have defined their lives.
Their faith has been another constant throughout their marriage. Today, Duane and Enid are active members of Hayden Bible Church. Through life's joys and its deepest sorrows, their commitment to God, to one another and to their family has remained strong.
They have created beautiful homes, cultivated beautiful gardens and, more importantly, cultivated a lifetime of friendships. At 87 and 85, Duane and Enid show no signs of slowing down. They continue to enjoy their family, friendships, travel, gardening and service to their community.
After 65 years of marriage, perhaps the greatest testament to their life together is not simply the number of years, but the number of lives they have touched along the way. Their marriage has weathered seasons of joy and seasons of loss, yet their faith and commitment to one another have remained steadfast.
Their family is grateful for the example they have given them: that a lasting marriage is built day by day—with faith, commitment, forgiveness, laughter, hard work and a willingness to show up for the people God places in your life.
The family will celebrate Duane and Enid's 65th wedding anniversary with a potluck picnic at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27th, at Hereth Park in Lewiston. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating this remarkable milestone and giving thanks for two people whose lives have been a blessing to so many.
