PREP FOOTBALL: Tamagni gets going, lifts Lakeland past Post Falls

RATHDRUM — At the start of the night, Lakeland wasn’t sure it was going to have senior tailback Griffin Tamagni for the second straight week. 

After a first series on the sideline, Tamagni told his coaches he was good to go on Friday. 

So, he went. 

Tamagni carried the ball 35 times for 205 yards and three touchdowns in the Hawks' 35-14 win over the Post Falls Trojans at Corbit Field. 

Tamagni, who suffered a sprained ankle early in the second half against Weiser on Sept. 4, missed the Sept. 11 game at Walla Walla. 

“He’s been banged up and had been out for the last six quarters,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “We still weren’t totally sure he could go. He came up to us and said he could play, so we gave him and shot and he definitely made an impact.” 

Tamagni scored on a 6-yard run to give Lakeland a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Senior Kayden Karle scored on a 60-yard interception return to make it 14-0 early in the second. After a Post Falls score on an 18-yard run by junior Kason Foreman, Karle recovered a fumble at midfield, setting up another Lakeland score just before halftime. 

“Post Falls had some turnovers that flipped the momentum a little bit,” Schroeder said. “I thought that if we didn’t turn the ball over, we’d have a chance. Our defense hung in there when it needed to as well.” 

Foreman scored on a 1-yard run with 3:46 remaining in the third to make it 21-14 Lakeland. 

“We were right in the game and it kind of got away from us in the fourth quarter,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “Lakeland does a good job, and they’re physical up front. They got some good movement from their offensive linemen and the running back runs hard.” 

Trailing with under 10 minutes remaining, Post Falls turned the ball over on downs in Lakeland territory on a fake punt, setting up a Tamagni score with 6:58 remaining to make it 28-14. 

“We’d stopped them on a drive and were looking for some positives,” Bennett said. “We were trying to get some momentum and it just kind of got away from us. Our kids played hard, but our defense was on the field a long time, and we just couldn’t move the ball. I thought our guys played hard all four quarters. Give credit to Lakeland. They did a nice job getting a win.” 

Lakeland (1-4) travels to Timberlake next Friday. 

Post Falls (0-4) travels to Eastmont of East Wenatchee, Wash., next Friday.

BUTTE, Mont. — Two lost fumbles and two other miscues on punts put Lake City (3-2) in a hole in the first half and the Timberwolves trailed 33-0 at halftime of the meet-you-halfway game with the Rams (1-3) at Montana Tech University. 

Highland scored twice in the first four minutes, then turned a Lake City fumble into a 4-yard run by Cedric Mitchell for a 12-0 lead. 

Karter Engebretsen of Lake City intercepted a Highland pass at the Rams 32, but the T-Wolves turned the ball over again on a fumbled handoff.  

Highland went up 19-0 on Kellan Tingey’s 3-yard run with 10:15 left in the first half. The score was set up when the Rams punter kept the ball on fourth down from his own 16, and ran it up to the 50-yard line. 

Jacob Vincent threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final 3 minutes of the first half and Highland led 33-0 at halftime.  

The second score was set up by a high snap over the Lake City punter’s head, for a loss of 32 to the Highland 8. 

It was Highland’s third straight win over Lake City in as many seasons. 

Lake City plays host to Sandpoint next Friday.

KELLOGG — Junior running back Joe Torr ran for 196 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers in a win over the Wildcats at Teeters Field. 

Senior quarterback Ryker Brennan threw for 110 yards and three touchdowns, two to senior Mason Shively and the other to senior Gaige Haines for Timberlake (2-2). Brennan also ran for a score.

Kellogg (0-4) hosts Grangeville in a Central Idaho League game next Friday. 

Timberlake hosts Lakeland next Friday.

PULLMAN — The visiting Lumberjacks dipped to 0-4 with the loss to the Greyhounds (3-0).

Felly Spooner rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown for St. Maries, which plays host to Orofino next Friday in Central Idaho League play.

SILVERTON — Junior Lennox Radford had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and had three receiving touchdowns and a kickoff return for a score for the Miners in a win over the Raiders of Coulee Dam, Wash., at Sather Field. 

Junior Cooper Miller threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and senior Hank Larson had two touchdown receptions for Wallace (4-0), which hosts Troy next Friday.
