Idaho's marksmen to display talents at weekend competition

North Idaho marksmen should lock and load for the second Shoot Sig at the Fernan Rod and Club this weekend.

“It's a really nice family-type shooting event,” said Fernan Rod and Gun Club instructor and organizer Heather Habermann.

Running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, Shoot Sig is open to shooters ages 10 and up. There will be prizes.

Habermann said the competition is beginner friendly but encourages the experienced shooter to compete. She said there is no drawing from a holster and that all shooting begins from the “low ready” position. 

She said safety is of the utmost importance. 

“There are so many safety officers to help them through it,” she said.

She said if someone does not own a Sig Sauer, they can borrow one.

Habermann said events like Sig Sauer’s are important” for the firearms community, but also valuable to those who may not be familiar with them or are curious about them. 

According to the Shoot Sig rulebook, the competition is judged in three rounds. Shooters will be put into a team of four and assigned a squad manager. The team will move to the three separate shooting stations for their three rounds. Each shooter will get two separately timed strings of fire, five targets each. 

Nick Lang, owner of Praetorian Armory and Coatings, participated in last year's Shoot Sig. He said the competition is not just about accuracy or time, but a combination of both. 

He said last year’s event brought out hundreds of residents, many of them loaded with talent.   

“North Idaho is unnaturally stacked with talented shooters, and they are some of the best people you will ever meet,” he said.
