WORLEY — The Snow Badgers of Ephraim, Utah, ranked 12th in this week's NJCAA poll, gave the 13th-ranked North Idaho College Cardinals an opening, and the squad from Coeur d’Alene didn’t miss on Thursday afternoon.

Tom Renner, a freshman from Frankfurt, Germany, scored on a penalty kick two minutes into the match for North Idaho College in a 3-0 win over visiting Snow in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at the Marimn Health Coeur Center, improving to 4-0 in conference play.

The PK was set by a hand ball out of the penalty zone by the goalkeeper, allowing Renner to score.

“We had a shot on goal and their keeper carried it out of the box,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “Tom took the shot and blasted it past him.”

Freshman Rabi Helmand, also from Frankfurt, scored to make it 2-0 in the 19th minute for NIC, which leads the conference.

“We were ready for a battle and fight today knowing they’re 12th and we’re 13th,” Williams said. “When we got that first goal, we saw their heads go down. We knew we could stay on top of them, and probably could have had five more goals, but their keeper made some great saves. We really had to defend in the second half, but were able to handle them.”

Snow is 3-4-1, 2-2.

NIC returns to Eisenwinter Field on campus to host Colorado Northwestern on Saturday.

First half — 1, NIC, Tom Renner (penalty kick), 2:00. 2, NIC, Rabi Helmand (Leonardo Andrejic), 19:00. 3, NIC, Lennox Kern (Dontae Logan), 37:00. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — Snow 3, NIC 12.
