Former Spokane police chief named Kootenai County undersheriff

Craig Meidl, the former chief of the Spokane Police Department, will serve as undersheriff of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

Meidl spent about 30 years with the Spokane Police Department and was appointed chief in 2016. He served in the role until early 2024. 

Norris said Meidl’s experience in leading a large law enforcement agency and working with multiple public safety partners sets him apart.  

“The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is a complex organization serving a rapidly growing community,” Norris said. “The undersheriff must be able to lead people, manage resources, work effectively with our law enforcement partners and, most importantly, understand that our responsibility is to the citizens we serve.” 

Meidl will replace former undersheriff Brett Nelson, who resigned in August after about five years in the position. 

Earlier this year, Meidl was one of the four finalists for the Coeur d’Alene police chief position. Greg Yeager was ultimately selected for the top spot.
