Summer's not over yet!
September signals the return to routine after a summer of adventure and leisure, with next week’s Labor Day last hurrah. September has long been one of my favorite months. We should have some still summer-like weather coming and more elbow room at boat launches, campgrounds and beaches.
The autumnal equinox, when day and night will be the same number of hours, will be at 5:05 p.m. Sept. 22 this year so we have 20 days to enjoy the best season of all before we’re bombarded with all things pumpkin spice. For those keeping track, there are 114 days until Christmas.

The last weekend of August was definitely a mixed bag weather-wise. Saturday lunch at the Floating Green Restaurant gave us a bird’s-eye view of determined golfers facing challenging wind gusts to shoot onto the famous Coeur d’Alene Resort floating green. If anyone succeeded, I didn’t happen to witness it. High winds and temperatures only reaching the high 60s certainly didn’t feel like the dog days of summer that usually come with August.
At the North Idaho State Fair on Sunday, the weather was perfect for the final day of the fair and rodeo. Blue skies, low 70s and no wind!
On the last day of August, Monday, my husband had a 7:30 a.m. tee time in Post Falls. The temperature as he walked out the door … 47 degrees! At least the sun was shining for a brisk morning of late summer golf.
With apologies to our resident Chief Meteorologist Randy Mann, my prediction for September weather in this neck of the woods is for many more sunny 80+ degree days. This prediction is based on my own more than half century of loving September in my Idaho home.
