Idaho landmarks to Light the World in Teal for Alzheimer’s Awareness
Some of Idaho’s best-known landmarks will shine teal Nov. 2 as part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s annual Light the World in Teal Alzheimer’s awareness campaign.
They will join more than 1,750 sites worldwide to raise awareness and show support for everyone affected by Alzheimer’s in what is believed to be the world’s largest organized collective light-up for a single cause. Teal is AFA’s Alzheimer’s awareness color.
“Every Light the World in Teal site, whether it’s a skyscraper, a stadium, or a small village hall, helps make Alzheimer’s more visible and encourages greater understanding and support for the millions of families affected by Alzheimer’s,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
Participating Idaho landmarks include the Parkside building in Coeur d’Alene. The 20-story high-rise on Front Avenue houses 69 luxury condominiums and was completed in 208.
Three landmarks in Boise are Eighth & Main, JUMP and the Idaho Power Building sign. The list also includes Friedman International Airport in Hailey.
“These Idaho sites are doing more than changing the color of a building — they are raising awareness and reminding everyone impacted by Alzheimer’s that they are not alone. We are grateful for their participation," Fuschillo said.
Light the World in Teal is AFA’s largest annual Alzheimer’s awareness initiative. More than 1,750 sites in all 50 states and 17 other countries/territories are participating.
More than 7 million Americans, including 30,000 Idaho residents, currently live with Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s is projected to double by 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Individuals can participate as well. On Nov. 2, people can “go teal” by wearing teal, displaying teal at home or work, or sharing information about Alzheimer’s disease.
