PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City gets the right stuff late at Lewiston
LEWISTON — Senior Brayden Van Leuven scored on a 6-yard run with 4:02 remaining and the Lake City defense made it stand up late as the Timberwolves defeated the Lewiston Bengals 14-13 at the P1FCU Sports Complex on Friday.
Lewiston scored with 15 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 14-13, but Lake City junior defensive back Nick Smith, who had an interception earlier in the game, stuffed a quarterback option on the conversion.
“They’d been moving the ball pretty well on us all night,” Lake City coach Byron Hout said. “We called our best run-stopping defense and Nick came up and made a big play. I’m proud of our guys for never stopping the fight.”
Lake City took a 7-0 lead with 5:31 remaining in the half on a 15-yard pass to junior Knox Keogh from sophomore Jax Pearson.
With Coeur d’Alene’s 41-10 win over Post Falls, Lake City (6-3) clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2019.
“These guys have just believed and bought into what they were coached to do,” Hout said. “They believed in us as coaches and that we’re trying to change the culture and get this program back where it needs to be.”
Lewiston (4-5) will also advance to the state 5A playoffs.
