PROP 1: Protect life
I am writing to express my opposition to Proposition 1, which seeks to provide “abortion rights.” While I am aware of the differing opinions on this deeply personal issue, we must face the fact that abortion raises serious ethical, spiritual, and moral concerns that cannot be overlooked.
Life begins at fertilization, and the child who has been conceived is not an accident. He or she is a gift from God. The termination of a pregnancy undermines this fundamental truth and ignores the awesome potential of a child who is destined to be a blessing.
Approximately 95% of abortions are elective rather than medically necessary. When abortion is chosen for convenience, Proposition 1 raises a serious ethical question: Is one life more valuable than another? Abortion has, shamefully, become a method of birth control.
Abortion can have lasting emotional effects on both the mother and father. Ending the life of an unborn child can make it difficult for people to face the reality of their decision. Some may become strong advocates for abortion, while others may live in silence and shame as they come to terms with what action they had taken.
There is an alternative to an unexpected pregnancy: adoption. Support is available for mothers and fathers who find themselves facing an unplanned pregnancy. Organizations such as Open Arms Real Life Choices provide support and resources. What may initially seem overwhelming, carrying a baby to term, can become a meaningful and wonderful experience.
Join me in rejecting this extreme proposition. In doing so, we can stand together to protect human life.
