WEDNESDAY EDIT: Medicare enrollment too important to ignore
For Idaho seniors, Medicare Open Enrollment is more than a yearly paperwork exercise. It's an opportunity to make sure your health coverage still fits your needs, your doctors are still in-network, and your prescription medications remain affordable.
This year's enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, and the Idaho Department of Insurance is urging beneficiaries not to assume that last year's plan is still their best option.
That advice deserves attention.
Across the country, Medicare Advantage plans are changing. Insurers are responding to higher operating costs, federal policy changes and new regulations by reducing benefits, narrowing provider networks, increasing cost-sharing in some cases or withdrawing plans altogether. What worked well in 2026 may look very different in 2027.
Nearly half of Idaho's Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, making these changes especially significant. Consumers whose plans are being discontinued should have already received notice from their insurer and will have options to switch plans or return to Original Medicare.
But even beneficiaries whose plans remain available shouldn't let coverage roll over automatically.
Every Medicare enrollee should review their Annual Notice of Change, compare premiums and out-of-pocket costs, confirm that preferred doctors and specialists remain in-network, and make sure prescription drugs are still covered under favorable terms. A few minutes spent reviewing coverage can prevent costly surprises.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the Idaho Department of Insurance Director Dean Cameron encourages consumers to shop and compare. We could not agree more. Health care needs change, prescription lists evolve and plan benefits are frequently updated. Medicare Open Enrollment is one of the few times each year when beneficiaries can make adjustments that could save money or improve access to care.
One resource available to Idaho seniors is SHIBA, the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors program. SHIBA counselors provide free assistance to help Medicare beneficiaries compare plans, understand benefits and navigate enrollment decisions. They can help consumers find coverage that best suits their individual circumstances.
And be careful. Open Enrollment is a peak time for misleading or aggressive marketing.
The key message for Idaho seniors is simple enough: Don't leave next year's health coverage to chance. Read the notices arriving in the mail. Ask questions. Compare plans. Seek professional guidance if needed. Whether you're enrolled in Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare, Open Enrollment is your opportunity to make sure your coverage aligns with your health needs and your budget.
As we all know, informed consumers are best positioned to protect both their health and their finances.
