PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland opens 5A IEL play with win at Lewiston

| October 10, 2026 1:18 AM

LEWISTON — He might not have started the game on defense, but Lakeland sophomore Madden Young was one reason why the Hawks were able to finish it on Friday night.

Young intercepted a Lewiston pass with under seven minutes remaining and the Hawks were able to run out the clock, beating the Bengals 21-14 in a 5A Inland Empire League game at the P1FCU Athletic Complex.

“We’d been moving some guys around and we really thought Madden needed to pick up his game,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “With some injuries and guys out, he stepped in there and made a big play.”

Lakeland senior Griffin Tamagni ran for three touchdowns, including a 3-yard score late in the third to make it 21-14.

“He had another great game,” Schroeder said. “We just wanted to minimize our risk and max on what we do well. Our pass game has been affective lately, but we wanted to lean on the (offensive) line tonight.”

Lewiston opened the scoring after getting the ball at the 3-yard line after a fumbled snap on a punt. Tamagni had a 52-yard run to set up a tying score in the first.

Lakeland recovered a fumble at the Lewiston 48-yard line and went ahead on a 3-yard run by Tamagni to make it 14-7. Lewiston’s Blaze Hepburn tied it at 14-14 late in the first quarter on a 2-yard run.

Lakeland shut out Lewiston in the second half defensively.

“We wanted to see some better execution in the second half,” Schroeder said. “Physically, I thought we’d match up with them well. Our defense showed up to play and we were kind of a Mash unit, but we’re proud of the kids that stepped up. They proved well for us.”

Lakeland (3-4, 1-0 5A IEL) travels to Moscow next Friday.

Lewiston (3-4, 0-1) travels to Sandpoint next Friday.
