PREP SOCCER: Viking boys start fast, shut out Post Falls
• BOYS
COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene wants to play fast.
The start of the second half in Saturday’s 6A Inland Empire League match was a good example of that.
Senior Brett Johnson scored on an assist from junior Blake Baune just moments after kickoff for the Vikings in a 9-0 win over the Post Falls Trojans in a 6A Inland Empire League match at Viking Field on Saturday.
“Blake Wise played the kickoff to Baune, who hit a through ball to Brett for the goal,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “It might have caught them off guard. We’re trying to make our attack as quick as possible and want to be quick and clinical, and the boys did a good job of that today.”
Baune recorded a hat trick and Brett Johnson had two goals and an assist for Coeur d’Alene (12-0-1, 4-0 6A IEL), which awaits the winner of next Saturday’s district-opening match between Post Falls and host Lake City in the district championship match on Oct. 13 at Viking Field.
Post Falls (2-10, 0-4) hosts Saint George’s on Monday.

Senior Aspen Liddiard scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for Lakeland (3-7-3, 1-4-3 5A IEL).
“We had a rough start in the first half today,” Lakeland coach Allison Guy said. “We just weren’t playing to the best of our abilities. We changed some things up and turned things around in the second half. I’m so proud of how my girls came back out in the second half today. It was a day and night difference. Usually a forward, but filling in on the wing today Sydney Thompson had a phenomenal game. Then in the final minutes, Aspen came in clutch with a powerful PK shot.”
