CONTRIBUTED CONTENT: The best work we do

The best work we do is often defined by the things that never happen. Without context, this is a rather confusing opening statement, but it is one of the foundational building blocks of our success as a company. I'm speaking about the jobs that go flawlessly, as well as the near misses that remind us how important preparation really is. You may see the tree coming down, the chips flying, and the finished yard. What you don’t necessarily see is the planning, equipment checks, communication, job hazard analysis, drop-zone management and countless small decisions that make the work safer.

Our goal is to execute the work in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Here at Grace Tree Service, we allow our core values to drive this effort. Those values are Safety, Professionalism, Work Ethic, Team Camaraderie and a Servant’s Heart.

This all begins with the professionalism of our office staff and the first contact when you, as a customer, call in for service. We take every phone call as an opportunity to serve you as our customer. Our receptionists enjoy getting to know you as they gather the necessary information and get you scheduled for a visit with one of our arborists. We make sure to take the time to gather accurate information from you and get you scheduled with our next available estimator.

Once on site, our arborist will walk through your property with you to discuss the specific project and identify the scope of work needed. What also goes into this process is identifying hazards and challenges that the crew may experience while doing the work. Our arborists build the job with the foresight to anticipate what could go wrong and put parameters in place to prevent accidents or near misses. This is the first step in our safety program and points back to the opening line of this article.

Before we send our crews out to do the job, your estimator will brief the crew on the job and go over the specifics that pertain to your job site. We discuss hazards, challenges, and the small nuances of the job that are integral to a job well done. The crew also conducts a job hazard analysis prior to commencing any work on site. The foreman will run through a checklist to confirm and identify potential hazards and challenges. Just as importantly, we establish an emergency response plan so that, should something happen, everyone understands their responsibilities and how to get the appropriate help on site.

Excellence is rarely an accident; it’s built through preparation and habits practiced when nobody is watching. Next week, I will go more in depth on what our safety program looks like here at Grace Tree Service.
