THATCHER, Ariz. — The 20th-ranked Matadors of Yuma, Ariz., scored 24 points off 25 turnovers in a win over the Cardinals at the Gila Monster Invitational at Eastern Arizona College.

“Karsyn Freeman, who scored 38 points in Thursday's opener, was limited by foul trouble and finished with 12 points for NIC. Myckenzee Mitley, a redshirt freshman from Post Falls High, had 12 points for the Cardinals.
"Karsyn got into foul trouble early and sat the entire third quarter," said NIC coach Louie Vargas, whose team was outscored 27-14 in the third quarter. "The third quarter kind of got away from us. We threw some junk defenses at them, changed it from zone to man along the way, which kept them at bay."

Karstyn Kiefer, a freshman from Lakeland High, had four points and five rebounds for NIC (0-2), which faces tournament host Eastern Arizona tonight at 6.

"Karstyn did a good job of controlling our offense and Myckenzee was wise, getting buckets when we needed it late," Vargas said. "With the turnovers, it was buckets for them."

Arizona Western is 2-0.
