ELECTION: Note to a stranger

| November 6, 2026 1:00 AM

To the person that disagreed with me on election day:

On election day, I stood at the corner of Hanley and Ramsey all by myself holding a “Yes for Coeur d’Alene Public Schools” sign. I’m not a professional activist, and honestly, I was out of my comfort zone. I’m a local educator who grew up here in Cd’A and graduated from Cd’A public schools — a fact I am so proud to share. Between waves and smiles from those supporting my cause, a passing driver offered me a gesture that was, shall we say, not a wave back.

Here’s the thing: I smiled, waved, and laughed it off. I also found it ironic, because the gesture given to me is why I fight so hard for our kids — to teach them the exact opposite of what I was shown by a stranger who doesn’t know my story or who I am.

I didn’t choose this profession for the pay (ask my accountant) or the glory. I chose it because I believe each student can grow into a thoughtful, engaged citizen who demonstrates kindness always. A huge part of an educator’s work is helping young people learn that we can disagree — passionately, even — and still treat each other with respect. That we can argue about levies, budgets, and ballot measures without losing our manners or our humanity.

So to the driver in question: no hard feelings. Honestly, you gave me a great story and a reason to fight harder. You’re welcome to disagree with me, my cause, or my politics — just maybe keep all five fingers on the wheel while you do it.

Our students are watching how adults handle disagreement. Let’s model it well. Thank you, voters, for supporting our students — and please wave kindly wherever you go.
