BLM reopens improved recreation sites in North Idaho

COEUR d’ALENE — The arrival of spring brings a fresh look to several Developed Recreation sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s Coeur d’Alene Field Office. 

A series of improvements made possible through the Great American Outdoors Act have been completed ahead of schedule, allowing the field office to reopen areas that experienced temporary closures earlier this season.

Upgrades were completed at multiple recreation sites, including Mineral Ridge Boat Launch, Mineral Ridge Trailhead, Beauty Bay Picnic Area, Blackwell Island Boat Launch, Mica Bay Boater Park, Killarney Lake Campground, and Huckleberry Campground. 

Visitors will now find new, fully ADA-compliant site furnishings—such as picnic tables, fire rings, and charcoal grills— installed to enhance accessibility and comfort, a BLM press release said.

At locations featuring asphalt facilities, crews also completed fresh surface recoating and restriping to improve navigation and enhance the overall visitor experience.

With these improvements finalized, the BLM is pleased to announce that Huckleberry Campground is now fully open for reservations—just in time for visitors heading to the St. Joe River for this weekend’s World Jet Boat Championship races.

As a reminder, Blackwell Island remains under annual seasonal closure and will reopen May 21.
