Eight-year-old nature lover dreams of helping animals

COEUR d’ALENE — Eight-year-old Scarlett Fae Johnson once volunteered to go to jail just so she could pick up trash. 

This idea has blossomed into a deep love for the outdoors, including participating in the Jr. Ranger national competition.

Her aunt, Kathy Schnell, has worked hard to keep Johnson inspired in her love for nature.

“I’m passionate about keeping Scarlett interested in the planet and all of the wonderful animals we have here in North Idaho,” said Schnell.

Johnson is currently in eighth place in the competition, competing against hundreds of other nature-loving kids nationally. 

The winner will get $20,000, meet Jeff Corwin, a TV host, wildlife expert and conservationist, and get their very own place in a Ranger Rick children's magazine. 

Johnson is just happy at the opportunity to see more animals and learn.

“It feels pretty good because if I get in I can help animals and get to look at plants and things I haven’t seen before,” Johnson said.

Johnson participates in her local Cub Scouts troop, something she loves, is very proud of and considers one of her favorite things to do outside.

“I love Cub Scouts, especially when it's outside,” she said.

Johnson once saved a monarch butterfly from drowning and did everything she could to help it recover. 

“A butterfly got stuck in the water and we saved it,” said Johnson, with Schnell adding that the butterfly she saved comes back to visit every year. 

Johnson has already gotten a jumpstart on her dream job. 

“I would like to be a biologist so I can help animals and discover new plants,” she said. 

If she had to pick a place to go and be a biologist, she would pick Florida. 

Coincidentally, that is where Johnson will get to visit Jeff Corwin if she wins the competition.
