NIR: Preserving values that defined Idaho

| May 15, 2026 1:00 AM

Recent comments about the North Idaho Republicans deserve clarification, because voters should understand who is shaping our local Republican landscape.

NIR is not a “second Republican Party.” It is an association of longtime Idaho Republicans — many from multi-generation Idaho families, along with former GOP officials, business owners, veterans and community volunteers — who were active in the party long before recent conflicts began. Their goal is not to “turn Idaho blue,” but to preserve the conservative values that have defined Idaho for decades.

The claim that NIR “announced itself as a new party” is inaccurate. NIR is a Republican-aligned civic organization, similar to others across the state, supporting candidates they view as mainstream, responsible conservatives. Their voter guide is not a “duplicate ballot,” but a common method used by many political groups — including the KCRCC — to share endorsements. Voters can compare recommendations and decide for themselves.

The split in Kootenai County did not occur because a new group tried to break away. It happened because many longtime Republicans became concerned about the direction and tactics of the current KCRCC leadership. These Republicans didn’t leave the party; they stayed and organized to promote conservatism grounded in integrity, civility and effective governance.

Reasonable conservatives can disagree about candidates or priorities. That disagreement does not make one side “fake” or “deceptive.” It reflects a healthy debate about what leadership best represents Idaho values.
