Students awarded $50K through Major Don Gilger Scholarships
The selection committee for the 2026 Major Don Gilger Scholarship has announced this year’s recipients.
The scholarship program, funded by the Smock Family and administered in partnership with the Coeur d’Alene Kroc Center, will award 17 local students for their academic achievement, character, and dedication to service.
Three students have been chosen to receive $5,000 scholarships, while 14 will each receive $2,500 awards. These scholarships are meant to support graduating seniors as they pursue higher education at Christian colleges or technical programs.
The Major Don Gilger Scholarship honors the legacy of Major Don Gilger, who, along with his wife, Major Ronda Gilger, dedicated 41 years to serving as officers in The Salvation Army.
From 2018 to 2025, the Gilgers served as executive directors of the Coeur d’Alene Kroc Center, where they played a vital role in advancing its mission and community impact, a press release said.
"Major Gilger was widely recognized for his integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to faith-centered leadership," the release said. "Under his guidance, the Kroc Center became not only a hub for recreation and community engagement but also a place where individuals and families could grow spiritually and deepen their connection to service and purpose."
Established in 2025 by Pepper and Midge Smock, the scholarship reflects Major Gilger’s belief in the transformative power of education rooted in Christian values. The program aims to recognize and support young leaders who demonstrate strong character, initiative, and a genuine heart for others.
Eligible applicants include graduating seniors from accredited high schools in Kootenai County and Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle, Wash. Recipients are selected based on their ability to articulate how their accomplishments have shaped their character, the influence of mentors in their lives, and how their educational journey will prepare them to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
"This year’s recipients represent the next generation of leaders committed to service, faith, and community impact, continuing the legacy that Major Don Gilger championed during his life," the release said.
