This week, the Main Street Birthday Club shout-outs number 70! I’ve collected quite a few birthdays of my fellow May babies through the years, so if you’re thinking there seem to be more than usual in the column this month, you may be right.
I unabashedly love celebrating my birthday and love to see others celebrate their special day, too. Any day that I’m vertical, surrounded by family and friends who’re like family and perhaps a slice of Boston Cream Pie or Texas Sheet Cake is a pretty great day.

When next week’s column is published Wednesday, the results of the Tuesday, May 19, primary election will be known. Early in-person voting is open at the Kootenai County Elections Department, 1808 N. Third St. until 5 p.m. this Friday, May 15. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day, May 19.
Every election and office is important, especially those with taxing authority. At kcgov.us there’s a link for the sample ballot for your precinct.
As the saying goes, we do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority of those who participate. Vote!

Words of wisdom from 74 years on this earth … I wish when I was in my 20s or 30s, I’d been savvy enough to have cultivated friends from many generations but at that stage of life we’re more likely to be surrounded by a tribe of peers our own age. Reach up and down the generations for friends!

Saturday birthdays will be celebrated by Diane Wahl, Wednesday Walton, Kari Malkovich, Cindy Barnes, Natalie Fritz and Michelle Richter. Taking another trip around the sun on Sunday are Bryan Myers, Allison Krutulis, Jared Janke, Brad Finney, Shawntel Shofner, Brad Enders and Christine Brannon (70!). Sharing a May 18 birthday are Vicki Isakson, Lauren Hopkins, Amy Corbett, Tom Ball, Corky Chadderdon, Shaun Johnson and Tina Haskin. On Tuesday, birthday candles will be lit for Laura Stensgar Penney, Nellie Thompson, Tom Lien, Vera Brown, Julie Kohut, Jessica McGreal, Tammy Rupinski and Rick Nowoj.
