SAFE START: Gratitude for Mason Mocha supporters

Twenty-three years ago, my infant son Mason died. There are no words that ever make that reality easier, but over time, our community has helped me carry it in a different way — by remembering him, saying his name, and showing up for other families whose babies have died.

On April 24, that support was felt in a powerful way during Mason Mocha, Coffee for a Cause.

For the past 15 years, this day has brought our community together, and I want to extend my deepest thanks to the incredible small business owners who made it possible: Soda Love, Cupcaker Baker, Outlaw Coffee, Great Escapes, Savage Coffee Co., Heavenly Brews, Lakeland Perk, Down Range Espresso, Lean Bean, Gourmet Bean, Coffee Corral, Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck, Monday Mornings, and Anchored Coffee and Bakery.

These stands are owned by people who choose, year after year, to show up for something that matters. Each one donated 20% of their sales that day to Safe Start — support that helps us provide education, safety resources, and our Healing Together program for families in our community.

Throughout the day, cups of coffee went out with Mason’s photo placed on each one. In those small exchanges, his life was remembered, his name was shared, and his sunshine smile reached people across Coeur d’Alene.

To everyone who stopped by a stand, bought a drink, or shared a kind word — thank you. Your support helps ensure families facing the death of a child are not alone.

Because of this community, Mason’s memory continues to shine bright.

THANKS: Dear good Samaritan: 

I apparently lost my U.S. Bank credit card on April 22. Frantic when I went to pay for something on the 28th and did not have it, I spent several hours looking everywhere at home. I prayed for guidance. 

I finally looked at the last thing I bought with that card — and it was at Safeway across from Kootenai Health. I called Safeway and they said it was found in the parking lot. 

They didn't give their name, but God saw. Please accept my gratitude!!

Miracles happen every day. As always, I feel I am sure lucky to know who is watching over me.
