COUNTY: Inflexible daycare policy unfair

I am writing to express concern regarding the County Commissioners’ refusal to allow even a modest 30-minute flexibility for staff who need to drop off their children at daycare facilities that are not located just minutes from the office.

Requiring employees to meet a strict 7:00 a.m. start time, without consideration for real-world childcare logistics, places an unnecessary burden on working families. In some cases, staff may be forced to remove their children from established daycare environments simply to meet this rigid schedule. Such disruption can be stressful for children, who thrive on consistency, and for parents trying to balance both family and professional responsibilities.

I am deeply ashamed of this lack of understanding and consideration for working families.

When employees know their children are safe, stable, and well cared for, they are better able to focus, perform effectively, and contribute positively in the workplace. Denying a small, reasonable adjustment risks the opposite — reduced morale, increased stress, and diminished productivity.

A limited exception or flexible approach for working parents is not unreasonable — it is practical. Supporting families ultimately supports a stronger workforce and a healthier community.

Idaho values family. Our policies should reflect that.
