ELK: Mass kill of herd over flowers in subdivision

| March 4, 2026 1:00 AM

The wolf control article admits that human growth and intrusion of massive new housing tracts is the problem with reduction in elk herds. But yet, they did the control on the one wolf pack in Kootenai County for elk. Ridiculous! Here’s what Fish & Game did in our past that was horrible, but a little more honest. Please reach out to Kootenai County Commissioners to stop this fake BS.

I worked for the Kootenai County Assessor for 20 years. Fish & Game came in one day and wanted a list of all property owners that were residents of a certain new subdivision on the Rathdrum Prairie. He said the elk herd crossed the area (as it does every year during migration) and was eating the roses and plantings in the new subdivision and the new neighbors were complaining. I supplied the ownerships for Fish & Game, and they mailed occupants notification of a controlled shoot day and time. Fish & Game shot and killed the entire elk herd of 23 that day. Please, long-term locals, stand up with me now! Contact your local county official and say NO MORE!
