Richard 'Rich' Theodore Grieb, 81

| June 21, 2026 1:00 AM

Richard “Rich” T. Grieb, 81, of Hayden Lake, Idaho, passed away with his wife by his side June 14, 2026. Born on Aug. 21, 1944, in Santa Maria, Calif., Richard lived a life defined by hard work, a mischievous sense of humor, and a generosity that often exceeded all reasonable limits.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army. His service was a point of quiet pride — never overstated but always present in the way he carried himself and supported others.

A dedicated small business owner in the landscaping industry, Richard spent decades shaping properties across California and Idaho. He approached his work with pride and earnestness, earning the respect of clients who valued both his craftsmanship and his straightforward honesty. His hands were rarely idle, and he took satisfaction in creating spaces that brought others joy.

Richard loved a family picnic, especially with tri-tip barbecue, potato salad and horseshoes. He had a particular fondness for cribbage and poker, where his playful competitiveness was on full display. He loved to laugh — and he loved giving others a reason to laugh even more. His humor was infectious, occasionally a little naughty, and always delivered with a twinkle in his eye. Those who knew him well understood that beneath the jokes was a deeply kind man who gave freely of himself.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ida Mae and Conrad, and his stepson, David. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gwen; his daughter, Tricia (Phil); his son, Danny; his stepson, Steven; four grandchildren, Hunter, Sarah, Michael and Payton, all who brought him much pride and happiness; his siblings, Dean (Diane), Elaine (Loren) and Georgia; and many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Dick.”

A memorial gathering for family and close friends will be held in the coming months to honor Richard’s life and the many stories he leaves behind.

Donations may be made to Northern Lakes Fire District Local 4045, 125 W. Hayden Ave., Hayden, ID 83835, or Hospice of North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815.
