Vernon L. Green, 95

Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) resident Vernon L. Green died June 12 at the age of 95. He will be remembered by family, friends and neighbors as a man who always had a dog. He will be missed.

Vernon was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Vernon and Estelle (Sherry) Green. His only sibling, sister Beverly (Green) Carr, preceded him in death in 2012.

He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1949, serving aboard various Coast Guard Lightships along the Oregon and Washington Coasts as well as doing weather patrol during the Korean War. During shore leave in Seattle, Vernon met Jean Ferguson. They married June 6, 1951, in Glendale, Calif.

Vernon finished his tour of duty with the Coast Guard in 1952, after which the newlyweds settled in Santa Monica. They welcomed three children to the family — including a set of twins. 

Vernon worked as an electrician and retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Following his retirement, Vernon and Jean lived in Marcola, Ore., Redmond, Wash., and Grass Valley, Calif., before settling in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. His wife, Jean, preceded him in death in 2004 while residing in Coeur d'Alene; they were married 53 years. 

Vernon was a member of the Elks, the National Rifle Association and the American Legion. He was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years.  

He cherished family stories and the memorabilia of family history that had been left to him. He especially loved his dogs: Buttons, Daisy, Lucky, Storm, Klondike, Shadow, Rusty and Buck.

Vernon is survived by his son, David (wife, Betty) of Santa Monica; son Dan of Santa Monica, and daughter Debbie (husband, Bill) Braden of Beaverton, Ore., as well as grandchildren Laura and Michael. His much-loved niece, Carolyn Carr of Weiser, Idaho, also survives him.
