PEARL: U.S. is a republic, not a theocracy

Mr. Pearl, I read your letter with some interest. I am impressed with your two quotes below: 

“Rather than people depending on the state for their hopes, it should be God: 1) Loving God, 2) Loving our neighbor, 3) Being grateful, 4) Using our talents, 5) Listening more and 6) Using common sense.” 

“Proverbs 6:16-19 lists 7 things the Lord hates: 1) Arrogance, 2) Lying, 3) Killing the innocent, 4) Plotting evil, 5) Rushing to do evil, 6) Being a false witness and 7) Sewing discord among others.” 

I read the three letters to the editor you referred to without reference. Need I remind you that we are a republic, not a theocracy? As Benjamin Franklin noted, “We have a Republic, if you can keep it.” The Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights to insure our nation will remain a republic. 

I appreciate your right to your beliefs, Mr. Pearl, yet I also display your two statements for what they are: not consistent with the representation of a free society. It is amazing that your representation of Proverbs 6:16-19 is everything our current administration practices. The irony is palpable! 

I also live the other list you shared: I love a God of my understanding; Love my neighbors, all of them; I live in gratitude; I listen to others and respond with kindness; and I have common sense. 

The government is meant to help others, not to tear society apart. Please reflect on these points.
