Tom Homan, newly installed as commander of immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, said Thursday that federal agents would focus on "targeted" operations and shift away from broader sweeps that have sparked protests both in the city and nationwide.
In a Facebook post Thursday, we asked: "Do you think this is the right move?"
We received more than 225 responses. Many were critical of The Press for asking this question. Here are some of the responses:
"I want to see all of this STOP! We have plenty of enforcement already throughout this country. Anyone who commits any crime should be prosecuted. But trying to remove every person here without perfect documentation will destroy us all." — Dawn Wiksten, Kingston
"Certainly, with two tragic deaths something needed to happen and I think President Trump is making the right steps by de-escalating the situation and pulling back some of the troops that are there … Our federal law-enforcement officers who are on the tip of the spear every day, risking their life for us, deserve and demand our respect." — Damon Darakjy, Coeur d'Alene
"I think they should focus on the fraud. This seems to be a bigger distraction than anything else get to the bottom of that and why Ilan Omar went from thousands to millions in a year. Get to the bottom of that first and then dive back into immigration." — Giles Curtis, Coeur d'Alene
"Yes, it's a good move." — Dana Davis, Post Falls
"Coeur d'Alene Press, we can go anywhere to view online arguments on national issues. How about you focus on what is going on locally, objectively and fairly. We beg for local issues that affect us on a day-to-day basis" — Jim Beaumont, Coeur d'Alene
"Typical liberal news they weren’t doing broad sweeps. They were doing targeted arrest from the beginning. CDA Press don’t try an instigate the BS of the mainstream media." — Stephanie Ann
"Being in the United States without authorization is a misdemeanor. ICE has a budget that exceeds all state and local police departments combined. To go after misdemeanors. What happens when you call crime check for a misdemeanor? Do twenty armed thugs show up? The entire operation is ridiculous." — Terry Parker, Spokane
"Sounds like a part of an ongoing strategy to me: start with broad sweeps to pick up the bulk, then switch to targeted sweeps to pick up the rest." — Ehsan Arbabi, Coeur d'Alene
"Just enforce the law. We are a country built on law and order and we should tolerate nothing less." — Dean W. Hayman, Spirit Lake
