OPINION: Two paths forward
America is at an inflection point. And you get to choose with your words, actions, and dollars which path you will personally take.
For the past several years, Democrats have hosted their largest annual event around the same time as the Republicans' largest fundraiser. Voters need a chance to compare their choices side-by-side. We want our neighbors and friends to see clearly, and in-person, the values that each party promotes.
On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Democratic path will be defined by a focus on the American Constitution. The Kootenai County Democrats largest annual event will feature Dr. David Gray Adler as our keynote speaker. A nationally recognized constitutional scholar, he has authored six books and more than 100 scholarly articles on topics including presidential power and the Bill of Rights. His work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, federal courts and members of Congress from both parties. Dr. Adler has lectured widely across the nation, taught constitutional courses at all three Idaho universities, and remains a frequent commentator on constitutional issues in media and public forums. His practical insights into the American Constitution seem more timely than ever. He will be joined by Idaho’s Democratic choice for governor, Terri Pickens. The evening’s emcee will be your Democratic choice for the U.S. House: the indomitable Kaylee Peterson.
The following week, Idaho Republicans will line up behind disgraced congressman Matt Gaetz. The Kootenai County Republicans hired a keynote speaker for their banner annual event who “violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.” (House Ethics Committee report, Printed December 23, 2024).
Civic and political gatherings held within our city reflect the values we choose to elevate and the standards we expect of those granted a public platform. These events provide two very contrasting choices for our community. Is Kootenai County a community founded on principles of integrity, respect for the rule of law, protection of children, and the dignity of all people? Or are we going to elect politicians who value punditry over integrity?
After the events of this past week, our choices seem more critical than ever. We have witnessed courage and cowardice on an epic scale, unfolding through numerous angles of cellphone video. We have seen people stand up for truth, for the rule of law, and for the dignity of others — even when doing so came at great personal cost. And we have also seen politicians jump to speak ill of the dead and choose spin over accountability. It is becoming increasingly difficult to remain neutral.
Even if you can’t make it to the Democracy Dinner on Feb. 21, you still have a choice. In the coming months, you will have the choice to look closely at Democrats who are running for office. You can choose to support them with your words, your time, or your money.
History is shaped by people who decide, even in uncertainty, that some values are worth defending out loud. Our communities, our institutions, and our children are watching how we respond. Every choice — to speak, to vote, to show up or to look the other way — helps define the road we are on.
While Republicans beat the drums of war and punditry, Democrats are intentionally walking the path toward Constitutional order and peace.
We are choosing the path that leads to a more perfect union. Will you join us?
