GREENLAND: Oppose annexation

| January 21, 2026 1:00 AM

I must confess a certain excitement at the thought of telling my grandchildren that I was there for the founding of New Maine. But I will not overcome the shame of being here and saying nothing. This is my feeble attempt at saying something.

I want to express my clear opposition to any attempt by the United States to acquire Greenland by force, coercion, or threats. I have watched various administration talking heads espouse tortured arguments that this is necessary and beneficial for America. Marketing a terrible idea is tough business. I am impressed at their skill. But some things are plainly wrong — impassioned rhetorical alchemy does not create truth.

America is better than this.

I respectfully ask those in power to oppose any effort — direct or indirect — to take Greenland by force or coercion. “America First” is a title, not a policy. As policy, it has been poorly explained in the national conversation. Are we seriously considering invading Denmark? Or are we just trying to put a good scare into Europe? For what, the fun of it, a bruised ego, Norway’s Christmas card getting lost in the mail?
