TRANSPARENCY: Work required, do your part

Next to affordability, transparency is a hot topic in politics today. “Transparency! We demand more transparency!” But what does that mean exactly? Transparency is operating in such a way that it is easy for others to see what actions are performed.

I have found local government to be very transparent. From Post Falls City Council meeting agendas and the DOGE Dashboard at the Idaho Legislative website, to the websites of various urban renewal agencies and the Idaho Transportation Department, if you know where to look you, you’ll find transparency.

Those susceptible or addicted to drama will believe rumors or hearsay. If it smells of a conspiracy, nefarious intention, or their guy didn’t win the last election, they’ll believe the worst and often try to cause a stink.

The cry for transparency often comes when what is happening is something someone doesn’t like or they just don’t understand the process. Now I am not saying that fraud and negligence doesn’t happen, as is evident with what’s going on in Minnesota and California, but I know some are quick to see deception around every corner.

Transparency won’t go knocking on your door. It doesn’t seek you out, you must do a bit of work to find answers. Council and commissioner meetings are open to the public, agendas & minutes are accessible online, meetings are recorded, and financial reports are readily available. Communication is a two-way street. Do your part.
