Athol man arrested on assault charges

An Athol man was arrested for assault and other charges on Thursday in Coeur d'Alene.

Marshall Levi McMullin, 35, was booked on charges of aggravated assault, battery on a police officer, and obstruction, according to a press release from Coeur d'Alene police.

The release said police officers responded to a report of an aggravated assault about 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot in front of Batteries Plus, located within the Target shopping complex. Initial reports indicated that a male suspect had threatened another male with a knife. 

The second male, who was legally carrying a concealed handgun, was able to subdue the suspect after a brief struggle. Responding officers arrived and detained both individuals, the release said.

During the investigation, officers learned that an intoxicated male, later identified as McMullin, had been loitering near the front of the business. As a male customer walked past, McMullin intentionally bumped into him and became verbally aggressive. 

When the victim confronted McMullin, McMullin produced a knife and threatened him, the release said. The victim, armed with a handgun, was able to disarm and restrain McMullin before calling law enforcement.

"McMullin was highly intoxicated and combative with officers on scene," the release said. "After resisting and fighting with officers, he was taken into custody and transported to the Kootenai County jail."
