Post Falls considers monument to celebrate with America250

POST FALLS — Post Falls officials hope to add a patriotic monument to help celebrate America's 250th birthday.
“At this point, the monument is in the conceptual phase,” Parks and Recreation Director Kris Ammerman said. “The preliminary idea was a granite monument with a commemorative inscription and a bench.”
Post Falls adopted the America 250-ID Proclamation on Jan. 20 to publicly recognize the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The Post Falls City Council voted earlier this week to move forward with participation in the America250 Idaho Celebration Fund Grant Program.
A $2,500 grant and outside donations would fund the project.
City staff is collaborating with local community organizations, such as the Post Falls Historical Society, to identify meaningful ways to honor the historic milestone.
If the city does not receive the grant, the project will not move forward.
The exact location on the City Hall campus to install the historical monument is unknown at this time.
Council members offered staff input on completing the grant application and on identifying potential monuments.
City Councilor Samantha Steigleder noted that artists outside the area produced the last two pieces of art.
“Could we try to prioritize having a sculptor, artist or designer that is from Post Falls?” Steigleder asked.
City staff agreed to look into options with local artists.
City Councilor Jack Mosby expressed a wish that the America250 monument would be a more dynamic art piece.
"This is America250, it’s kind of a significant anniversary. I’d like to see whatever sculpture is there be somewhat patriotic, not just a rock bench,” Mosby said.
