Randles declares candidacy for District Judge Seat A

Judge Destry William Randles recently announced his candidacy for District Judge Seat A in Idaho’s First Judicial District following the retirement of Judge Barry McHugh. 

Currently serving as a magistrate judge, Randles brings extensive public service experience and a deep commitment to fairness, integrity, and the rule of law to his candidacy in the May election, according to a press release.

In announcing his candidacy, Randles stated, “The letter of the law is the foundation of a fair and just society. A judge’s role is to resolve disputes impartially, apply and interpret the law, and to see that people receive fair treatment. I am honored to be part of the judiciary in Idaho’s First Judicial District and look forward to the opportunity to serve the citizens of Kootenai, Bonner, Shoshone, Benewah, and Boundary Counties as a District Judge.” 

Dedication, determination and service have defined Randles’ professional journey. While working full-time as a district manager for a large petroleum company over a 20-year career, he earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Lewis-Clark State College. He later graduated with honors from Gonzaga University School of Law. 

Following law school, Randles served as a staff attorney for now Idaho Supreme Court Justice Cynthia K.C. Meyer. He subsequently joined the Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office as a deputy prosecuting attorney, where he successfully prosecuted a wide range of misdemeanor and felony cases. He also served for five years as the county’s representative in DUI Court. 

The Magistrates Commission later selected Randles to serve as a magistrate judge in Idaho’s First Judicial District, where he has presided since August of 2022. His experience as a judicial staff attorney, a deputy prosecuting attorney and a judge has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the judicial system and the significant responsibilities entrusted to the bench, the release said.

Originally from Montana, Randles has been a resident of North Idaho for 26 years and is deeply rooted in the community he serves. He coached youth baseball, volunteered as an umpire, and served on the Lakeland Little League board for many years. He also helped establish, coached and umpired in the Northern Lakes Mountaineers American Legion Baseball program, serving the Lakeland School District. Before his judicial appointment, he served as chair of the Rathdrum Urban Renewal Agency. 

Randles enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He has been happily married to his wife, Becky, for nearly 29 years. Together, they have three wonderful sons, two grandchildren and recently welcomed two daughters-in-law to their growing family.
