Annual SMC Heart Ball to fund life-saving crash carts

WALLACE — The Shoshone Medical Center Foundation will hold its annual Heart Ball Fundraiser on Feb. 14, with proceeds dedicated to the purchase of four lifesaving crash carts for Shoshone Medical Center. 

Crash carts, also known as code carts, are mobile units used in hospitals during life‑threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. They allow medical teams to begin advanced life support immediately when a Code Blue, or critical emergency, is called. 

Crash carts typically contain airway and breathing tools such as bag‑valve masks, oxygen supplies, suction and intubation equipment; circulation and IV supplies including catheters and fluids; and emergency medications such as epinephrine, amiodarone and atropine. They also include a defibrillator, cardiac monitor, syringes and other essential supplies. Carts are standardized, secured and checked daily to ensure readiness. 

On average, crash carts cost $3,000 to $5,000.

“Your life will depend on them,” SMC Physician Dr. Farah Vega said. “The carts contain all the medication and equipment needed to revive you if your heart or lungs fail.” 

The SMC Foundation works year‑round to support the healthcare needs of the Silver Valley, helping fund equipment, services and education. It also supports healthcare career days, scholarships and health fairs. 

For the Heart Ball, the foundation is seeking support through sponsorships, silent auction items, ticket purchases and donations. 

“Your attendance and support are the driving forces behind our ability to provide essential equipment, services and education at Shoshone Medical Center,” SMC Foundation Director Jake Pommerening said. “Together, we are ensuring excellence in healthcare for our entire community.” 

The Heart Ball is at The Wallace Elks. Cocktails begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.
