USS LINCOLN: Another vet’s perspective

Regarding the My Turn Letter from the Veterans For Idaho Voters published on August 19th; I do not want those who have never served to get the wrong idea of what our military is up against and respectfully offer the following perspective: I was a USMC pilot for 10 years and served extensively aboard U.S. Navy ships. I am also a combat veteran. My son is currently a U.S. Navy officer assigned to CVN-69 and has also spent considerable time deployed across the globe over the past 13 years. I therefore have a good understanding of the challenges associated with shipboard life and a genuine concern for the welfare and safety of those who are serving today as well as their families. 

Yes, extended deployments are definitely a grind and the sacrifices are significant but our young sailors and Marines are tough, strong and resilient. They are also well supported and led by outstanding officers, CPOs and SNCOs. They all understand the challenges and importance of their roles and willingly accept their responsibilities. At the end of the day, it is their camaraderie, patriotism and ESPECIALLY their love for each other that strengthens and binds them together and brings them through the most arduous of situations. Bottom line: They’ll all be fine.
