TAXES: Government is not a business

| August 19, 2026 1:00 AM

A recent letter to the editor about proposed tax increases for Kootenai County, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls suggests holding government to private business standards.

He writes; “I own businesses here. When my revenue falls short, I don’t get to walk next door and force my neighbor to hand over a percentage of their sales to cover my inefficiency. I cut. I prioritize. I balance the budget, because I have to.”

The analogy is flawed.

Local government funding challenges are complex and require more than simple and misleading analogies.

In my experience, when business revenue falls short, prices increase.
