Douglas Wheeler, 82
Douglas Damon Wheeler, 82, of Hayden, Idaho, passed away peacefully July 24, 2026, after a courageous 11-year battle with cancer and other health challenges. He was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Missoula, Mont., to Damon and Mary Wheeler. Doug was raised in Plains, Mont., where he graduated from Plains High School before proudly serving four years in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman.
Doug spent his career in the automotive and heavy machinery industries as well as working in the Central Valley school district before retiring to Hayden with his wife, Marti, whom he adored. He remained active in the American Legion, his neighborhood community (Leisure Park), his church (Real Life Ministries), and a job club that he helped organize. He especially loved greeting church members as they gathered for service.
Doug was known for his undeniable love for God, his warm smile, friendly nature, excellent storytelling and love of making people feel welcome. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his travels with Marti, cheering on the Montana Grizzlies, and spending quality time with his loved ones, especially at Mirror Lake and the Yaak River in Montana. He was a loving grandpa and enjoyed sharing his values of hard work, faith and compassion through his heart-to-hearts with them and others. Doug was someone who truly cherished each moment.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Marti; children Jason (Helena), Danielle, Kevin (Noelle) and Rob (Krista); grandchildren LilyAnna, Wesley, Meili, Mason, Gavin (Kym), Brett (Auli), Maryssa (Ezra), Ashley, Micah and Malachi; great-grandchildren Zade and Beckham; brothers Jim and Jeff (Tina); and niece Madison.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at Real Life Ministries’ Coeur d’Alene campus on Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of North Idaho.
