Order of the Eastern Star Scholarship Car Show is May 2

Cool cars help students go far, thanks to the Order of the Eastern Star.

The charitable service organization will host its third annual Scholarship Car Show in Majestic Park in Rathdrum beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with judging at 10 a.m. and awards at 2 p.m.

"A couple years ago, the worthy matron asked me to be on the scholarship committee, and there were two of us," Worthy Matron-elect of the Queen Esther Chapter No. 12 Order of the Eastern Star Mauri Mosman said Tuesday.

Mosman responded that she wanted to create an event that supports local students, so her chapter now provides scholarships to high school seniors in Kootenai County. At the same time, the Idaho Grand Chapter focuses on support at the state level.

"This car show was developed and 100% of the proceeds go to scholarships in Kootenai County only, for graduating seniors," Mosman said. "It can be for a technical school or apprenticeship program they need assistance with."

Proceeds from the show have made it possible to distribute seven $500 scholarships to students each year. Mosman said the goal is to raise at least that amount for another year, funding seven scholarships or more.

In 2024, four recipients were from the Lakeland Joint School District, and three were from the Post Falls School District. Those students went on to attend the University of Idaho, North Idaho College, the University of Montana and Grand Canyon University.

In 2025, five recipients were graduates of Timberlake and Lakeland high schools, while two were from the Coeur d'Alene School District. Those students are on academic journeys at the College of Southern Idaho, the University of Idaho, Boston University, Grand Canyon University and the College of Idaho.

“We do it because we know it’s difficult for the youth to be able to afford higher education," Mosman said. "I would say 90% of our members are over the age of 60. We have a few younger members, but not that many. We want to help the youth; we know it’s difficult."

The annual car show is also a way for the Order of the Eastern Star to gain visibility. Mosman explained the organization is of the Masonic family, which includes Masons and Shriners.

"This is an opportunity for us to get out in the community, make ourselves known and perpetuate our organization," she said.

The third annual Order of the Eastern Star Car Show is open to classics, customs and special interest vehicles. Awards are for 1930 and older; 1940s to 2000s and newer; best theme; best truck; under construction; best of show; and sponsor's choice. The top four winners will receive handmade trophies crafted out of car parts.

Early registration is $25 and must be received by Friday. Day-of entry fee will be $30.
