SPEECH: A fundamental right

I feel compelled to address those who are calling for the firing or dismissal of community members who have chosen to speak out following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, and the actions of both the U.S. and Idaho attorneys general. It’s important to remember the words of Charlie Kirk himself, particularly his views on free speech as enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

In a post on the social media platform X in 2024, Charlie Kirk wrote, “Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”

We must recognize that freedom of speech does not only apply to the views we agree with or want to hear. It is a fundamental right for all Americans, even when the speech in question is offensive or challenging. If we begin to limit free speech based on our personal preferences, where does it stop? Should we apply the same logic to other Constitutional rights — such as the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment?

Let’s reflect on this: If we allow freedom of speech to be selectively restricted, what’s next? The protection of individual rights must remain broad, inclusive and unwavering.
