WELCOME: Signs removed is disappointing

The Coeur d’Alene School District’s decision to remove “Everyone is Welcome Here” signs from classrooms is deeply disappointing. These signs do not violate Idaho’s new flag law. They are simple, powerful reminders that every child, no matter their background, belongs in our schools.

By choosing to follow Attorney General Labrador’s opinion rather than the plain text of the law, the district sends the wrong message: that inclusion is controversial, and that kindness has no place in classrooms. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our students thrive when they feel safe, accepted, and respected.

This is especially important in Coeur d’Alene, a community that has long struggled with the shadow of racism and extremism. Removing a sign that says “Everyone is Welcome Here” only reinforces the perception that some children are not welcome. That is not the lesson we should be teaching.

As an educator, I want to encourage staff to continue showing students that they matter. On Wednesdays, let’s wear our “Everyone is Welcome Here” shirts. In fact, I would like to invite staff from public schools across Idaho to join us. Just remember, On Wednesdays we wear Welcome! A small act of unity can speak volumes to the children we serve. 

Our classrooms should be places where students feel they belong — and where a sign saying “Everyone is Welcome Here” is not seen as a threat, but as a truth worth living.
