PREVENTION: 988 Day is Sept. 8
Since the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline launched in 2022, almost 18 million people have reached out to get help for themselves or a loved one. Many people are turning to 988 for support, yet too many Americans still don’t know about this lifesaving resource.
988 is the nationwide number for people to call or text for help in a mental health crisis, during a period of emotional distress, or when having thoughts of suicide. The 988 Lifeline connects people with a humane, dignified and effective response during a crisis. September is Suicide Prevention Month, so it’s more important than ever to spread the word about 988.
As executive director at NAMI CdA, part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, I’ve seen first-hand how 988 has helped people in our community. Hope is found when they call 988.
988 is also more than just a number. It’s the first step toward building an ideal crisis response system for our community. We must keep up the momentum — and our commitment — to helping more people in Idaho who need support during a crisis. In 2023, Idaho reported the fourth highest suicide rate in the United States, with a rate above the national average.
On Sept. 8, 988 Day, NAMI CdA is raising awareness of 988 and calling on our community to continue work toward reimagining how we respond to mental health crises. Help us ensure every person experiencing a crisis, regardless of where they live or who they are, has someone to talk to, someone to respond, and a safe place for help.
