GOOKIN: Hazel endorses

This may surprise some folks, but I’m supporting Dan Gookin for mayor of Coeur d’Alene.

Years ago, Dan and I were on opposite sides of a local issue. But when North Idaho College came under attack, we both recognized how important it is to our community. Dan stepped up — on his own — to explain what was happening, even when it cost him personally. His YouTube updates helped thousands understand the facts when others stayed silent. He did that on his own. That independence and courage earned my respect.

I believe Dan is best prepared to take on one of the biggest challenges facing our community today: political fundamentalism and extreme division on both sides of the spectrum. He understands it, can identify it and knows how to uphold First Amendment rights while keeping Coeur d’Alene safe. 

He also has the support of law enforcement and, in my family, that means a lot.

Whoever wins this election will need community support and accountability — and they’ll have mine. And if you’re a friend reading this who supports someone else, that’s OK. We need to make space for different opinions and stay friends through it. 

This election isn’t easy, with four candidates running for mayor, but we’re all choosing what we believe is best for our hometown.
