'Voices and Votes: Democracy in America' exhibit opens
The Museum of North Idaho is hosting the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America," from Oct. 11 through Nov. 29.
This nationally acclaimed exhibition explores the origins, struggles and ongoing evolution of democracy in the United States — and how every generation has shaped what it means to be part of “We the People," a press release said.
“We’re honored to bring a Smithsonian exhibition of this caliber to North Idaho,” said Britt Thurman, executive director of the Museum of North Idaho. “Voices and Votes invites our community to reflect on what democracy means to each of us — and how our voices continue to shape the future of this nation. Be sure to visit both the museum and the library to experience the exhibition in its entirety.”
The exhibit is presented in two parts: one portion is on view at the Museum of North Idaho, and a complementary portion is displayed at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library. Visitors are encouraged to visit both locations to experience the full scope of the exhibition and gain a deeper understanding of the history and ongoing story of American democracy.
Voices and Votes is part of Museum on Main Street, a Smithsonian program that brings world-class exhibitions to small towns and rural communities across America. The Idaho Humanities Council serves as the statewide sponsor, partnering with the Museum of North Idaho to bring this meaningful exploration of civic life to the community, the release said.
"Drawing inspiration from the National Museum of American History’s exhibition American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, Voices and Votes examines the complex story of our nation’s government, elections and citizenship," according to the release. "Through interactive displays, historical artifacts, photographs and multimedia experiences, visitors will explore themes such as the right to vote, freedom of speech and assembly, the power of the press and the importance of civic engagement."
In addition to the national exhibition, the museum and library will feature local displays and programs highlighting North Idaho’s own democratic story, including the people, movements and moments that have influenced civic life in the region.
