VANDALISM: Independence Point plaque marred

Many out-of-state relatives and friends who have visited Coeur d’Alene often remark on the natural beauty of our area and the exceptional care given to our parks. That makes it especially disheartening to share that a National Society Daughters of the American Revolution bronze plaque at Independence Point — installed in 2024 in honor of the men and women who secured American Independence — was vandalized last summer, likely in June.

This plaque was part of the NSDAR’s national commemoration of our country’s upcoming 250th Anniversary. Deb Mitchell, a Museum of North Idaho volunteer and DAR member, led the multi-year effort that included fundraising, planning, and the installation of the large bronze plaque on a granite boulder.

Unfortunately, the plaque’s surface was intentionally scratched between the lettering in multiple places, diminishing its appearance and the dignity of the tribute it represents. Members of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, are committed to restoring the plaque to its original beauty.

Acts of vandalism will not deter the chapter — or the many local supporters of historic preservation — from continuing to place and maintain historical markers throughout our community.
